BLUFF by Lenore Skomal

bluffI am writing this review, moments after finishing reading it. I didn’t want to lose the thoughts that ran through my mind or lose the feeling of sadness, happiness and shock which is what Lenore’s BLUFF is all about.

This novel was given to me for review purposes and I am delighted that I had the great opportunity to read and review it. It is a simple. yet thought-provoking novel from start to finish.

Jude is in a coma and pregnant. We know she fell from a cliff; a mystery in itself. Was it attempted murder? The answer is not evident until just over half way; I was left guessing throughout. What is remarkable about the overall plot are the many turns and twists that are entwined with Jude’s life. We see Jude’s life in the first person when she talks about the people she loves and dislikes, sometimes bordering on hate. Sometimes she speaks from outside of the body and sometimes from inside as she lies on her hospital bed, unable to function without medical intervention.

There is only one person in Jude’s life who really matters to her and that is her best friend Frances.  We also meet her sister April, her mother who was hardly there and a few other people who are not directly related to Jude but somehow become so.

BLUFF is a rollercoaster of emotions and internal conflicts. Some religious questions are dealt with here that will make the reader question and appreciate the nature of Jude’s characterisation; how moral are the actions of the Church against her?

From all the characters, my favourite was of course the main star – Jude, for her quirky self but also for her insightful reasoning during her long stay in the hospital. We learn a lot about her and her life from that one room. My least favourite is Paul.

It is evident that a lot of research has gone into the novel; the quality and thoughtful sentences are written brilliantly bringing a joy to the reading. The pace was just right and there wasn’t a page where I got bored, every page was a page turner.

I would recommend this book for its great style and unique story.
